2020 December General Zoom Meeting: Else Vellinga

? WHEN: 12/16/2020, 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
? WHERE: Zoom Meeting, wherever YOU are

Please join us for our General Meeting on Zoom .  The Zoom session will be opened at 6:30 pm for those who would like to socialize and chat with fellow mycophiles before the main meeting, which will start at 7:00 pm.  A discussion of upcoming events and minister's reports will precede our speaker.

In addition, at the beginning of the meeting  Anna Cameron from CALFIRE will give short overview of the Soquel Demonstration State Forest and opportunities for mushroom collecting there.  Normally CALFIRE makes mushroom garthering permits available at our first fall meeting, but since that cannot happen in person in 2020, here is a form where you can sign up for a permit.  https://forms.gle/3u5Hf6b93zPqLz9U7  This form is just to add your information to a spreadsheet that the FFSC will provide to CALFIRE to make it easier to issue the free permits to our group.

Else Vellinga's talk is titled: Fascinating Mushroom Spores

Else Vellinga is a mycologist who is interested in naming and classifying mushroom species in California and beyond, especially Parasol mushrooms. She has described 22 species as new for California, and most recently worked at the herbaria at UC Berkeley and SFSU for the Macrofungi and Microfungi Collections Digitization projects. She got her training at the national herbarium in the Netherlands, and her PhD at the university of Leiden. In 2019 NAMA presented her with the Gary Lincoff award for her contributions to amateur mycology. She tries to keep current with the mushroom literature. Else is also an avid knitter and likes to use mushroom dyed yarn for her creations.

In the talk “Mushroom spores” she will talk about how spores are released into the world, show different spore shapes and embellishments and will ponder on the function of those different colours and ornamentations and the correlation with the mushroom’s life style.
