New: This class is now filled so enrolment is no longer possible.
Phil Carpenter is leading a series of Fall Mushroom Identification classes. October first was the first in a series of 4 classes. Classes will be held at the Santa Cruz Natural History Museum on East Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz from 7-9 pm.
Participants must be club members but since the class was free, the membership dues were the only fee for nonmembers. Participants come with fresh mushrooms from field or lawn, forest or mountains.
Classes are scheduled for the first and last Wednesday evenings for the months of October and November. We'll probably change the date of the last November class since the fourth Wed. falls on the night before Thanksgiving. In the past, we've moved the class to the Tuesday night before the normal fourth Wednesday.
We'll be learning how to use the field guide Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora to put names on mushrooms that attendees and the instructor will be bringing in.
The classes are conducted in a hands-on, workshop style with actual mushrooms collected by the class participants. Again, we use the field guide, Mushrooms Demystified, as the class text. Everyone should plan to have one. Even though it is pretty dated now, it is still the best guide to putting a name on a mushroom.
