So long without rain
Mushrooms poking their heads up
Soon become crispy!
This has been the driest year on record for Santa Cruz, having received only 1.3 inches so far this season of our average 11 inches to date. Mushroomers are conflicted: the weather sure is nice, but it all feels so wrong, and we miss the feel, smell and reward of wet woodlands!
Many fungi are waiting it out, with lack of moisture and cold temperatures slowing fruiting considerably. With luck and a few raindances, we may still put a few mushrooms in our baskets. In the meantime thank you, photographers one and all, for refreshing our memories!
