Please join us for our February Meeting at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History or on Zoom . If you plan to come in person, please RSVP via this Google Form. For those of you who would prefer to join us via Zoom, Please Join Here. The session will be opened at 6:30 pm for those who would like to socialize and chat with fellow mycophiles before the main meeting, which will start at 7:00 pm. Zoom participants will be able to chat among themselves until the start of main meeting.
Our February speaker is Arthur Lee, Founder, Mazu Mushrooms, Pescadero, CA
In the conversation Art will share with us his family’s journey and the basics of mushroom cultivation. He will teach us how to build grow houses of different scale, shotgun fruiting chambers (plastic tubs), Martha's tents (a mini greenhouse), and setting up larger greenhouse-like structures.
For those attending in person, grow kits, spawn bag, cultures and other supplies are available for demonstration.
In the islands of the South China Sea, the Goddess Mazu is revered as a protector of people who draw their livelihood from the sea. Art’s family lived here for generations and fled during the Cultural Revolution to settle on the California coast. In the late 80’s they started a mushroom farm in Pescadero, on the ancestral land of the Awaswas speaking Ohlone people. Art’s family eventually pivoted to growing bean sprouts in Gilroy, but his life’s journey has brought him full circle: back to the Pescadero coastline, and back to mushrooms. After graduating UCSC with a degree in Ecology and Evolution, Art spent years working the land, and always found himself fascinated by fungi. “At Mazu Mushrooms, I hope to provide my community with nutritious food and medicine grown in a way that regenerates the land that I love."
