Welcome!
The Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz is a nonprofit mycology organization headquartered in Santa Cruz, California. Our leadership group is known as the Ministers. So, think parliamentary offices (Prime Minister, Exchequer, Membership, etc.), rather than a faith-based ministry model. We hold monthly organizational meetings known as Ministers' Meetings. While these have always been open to the membership, locations have been variable amongst homes and/or with Zoom access.
To provide more transparency, encourage participation, and "Keep the Fun in Fungus", we are trying out a new model. Our April and May meetings will be potluck meetings at the Live Oak Grange in Santa Cruz, open to dues-paying FFSC members. They'll be held on Tuesday, April 8th and Tuesday, May 13th from 6 to 9 pm. Yes, it's a Tuesday! We are planning a zero-waste potluck event from 6 to 9 pm. Come join us for the evening! You'll have a great meal, get advance notice of upcoming events, make and deepen friendships, and get an understanding of how the club is run.
For an extra bit of fun, we're putting on a drawing of free mushroomy fun stuff. Everyone needs more fungal knick-knaks, no?

A discussion of upcoming events will precede our speaker, Douglas Smith, one of our members. At the general meeting, Douglas will present his study on the mushroom of Los Trancos.

A discussion of upcoming events will precede our speaker, Danny Miller, our guest speaker from the Pacific Northwest. At the general meeting Danny will talk to us about "Fungal Philosophies - Mythbuster, or Fungal Fables Debunked" - an entertaining look at common mushroom myths and the truth about them.
October General Meeting: Daniel Winkler
Please join us for our General Meeting at the Harvey West Scout House. Doors open at 7, with refreshments and informal mushroom ID from 7:00 - 7:30. We are pleased also to announce representatives from Soquel Demonstration Forests will also be joining us to share the latest going ons and will be available to issue permits for those who wish after the meeting. A discussion of upcoming events will precede our speaker, Daniel Winkler.

General Meeting-- Douglas Smith
Douglas Smith is a local amateur mycologist that has hunted mushrooms around the world. He photographs mushrooms where ever he goes and these photos are posted online, and have appeared in field guides, journals, and the National Geographic. In 2009 he had a chance to move to France, on the border of Switzerland, and lived there for two years.

Organizers will then provide updates on future forays and other activities, followed by our speakers. Bring along your sense of curiosity and any mushrooms you've found and would like help identifying.
Shannon Nix presents "Molding Human History: The biology, evidence, and speculation behind mycotoxicoses." Mycotoxins are poisonous secondary metabolites produced by fungi. Under favorable conditions microfungi or molds can proliferate and these toxic compounds can contaminate food and feed crops. If food contaminated with mycotoxins is ingested by humans or animals, severe and occasionally fatal toxicoses of the liver, digestive tract, or kidneys can result. This talk will discuss the biology and history of some of the most potent and important mycotoxins produced by molds.
