NAMA National Foray – Front Royal, Virginia (by Phil Carpenter)

Being retired, I like to travel to other parts of the country or world to pursue my interest in mushrooms. This year, I considered two choices: the annual foray to Alaska in August hosted by long-term FFSC member, Bill White, or the national NAMA (North American Mycological Society) foray to Virginia, set for September 8-11. For a variety of reasons, I opted to go to Virginia. Oops, not the best choice as it turns out - Alaska had primo pickin’ while Virginia didn’t...

2016 Alaska Foray Field Report

Ted showing off a Alaskan gold

First of all, before going Noah Seigel was saying it was going to be a banner year for mushrooms in Alaska.   They had been gettting plenty of rain this year.   Last year, it was a drought year and the rivers were low.  I was getting excited and checking the weather of Soldotna months before the trip.   My palms were sweating.

This will be my fourth consecutive trip now and I am an Alaskan fixture at Bill Whites Sports Lodge...

2016 Echo Summit Foray -- CANCELLED

? WHEN: 02-05, September 2016
? WHERE: Echo Summit Lodge, 9010 Johnson Pass Rd, Echo Lake, CA

Foray cancelled. Unfortunately, reports of bone dry conditions and few sign ups compelled us to cancel this annual foray.  Next year we hope for better dates and weather!

Our Annual Echo Summit Foray is scheduled for September 2 - 5, Labor Day Weekend, at the California Alpine Club’s Echo Summit Lodge, with breathtaking views overlooking the Tahoe Basin. If thunderstorms cooperate we will find quite a variety of fungi, including edibles, such as Bol etus and Leccinum. Regardless of the number of mushrooms found, we always have a wonderful time.

There is no limit to the foray size itself. FFSC members are welcome to stay off site and join us for the foray and meals. There is also RV parking next to the lodge. The lodge fills up fast so make sure you reserve your space in advance. Reservations for the lodge will open August 1. You must be a FFSC member for you and your family to attend.

Eldorado National Forest

Every year as the snows melt and the ground warms, some very delicious mushrooms coax their way up through the ground.  One of those is the coveted morel, others include  Spring King boletes, and often Coccoras.  This year's weather and snow pack has every indication that we will have a very successful foray.  Current FFSC members who are logged in on the website can get the location and date in the Members-only information  to follow. Quail Hollow Ranch Local Foray (by )

? WHEN: 03/12/2016, 10 am - 1 pm
? WHERE: Quail Hollow Ranch County Park

All are subject to cancellation/possible location change

SIGN UP/Confirmation is REQUIRED

Amanitas, Boletes, Chroogomphus, Suillus, Trametes and Tremella have all been found here, just to name a few. While there is no guarantee as to how the low levels of rain fall will affect the kinds of fungi we find this year, it promises to be a beautiful hike through varying types of terrain: Shady Oak groves, grassy fields, Manzanita thickets, and Pine trees. Further within the park, one will find winding Redwood paths and sandstone wall formations that are part of the Sandhill habitat that lies between Ben Lomond and Scotts Valley.  The trails vary in difficulty; very flat and easy to somewhat Quail Hollow Foraymoderate.

Quail Hollow has given us permission to pick within the park but we cannot take anything we pick outside of the park.  Parking at the Ranch is very limited so car pooling is recommended, as there is no street parking. Through the efforts of previous forays, the FFSC has created a good relationship with park leaders, and we ask that you please respect their requests.

Echo Summit 2015 Foray Report (by Anna Stockel)

Lisa finds a Reishi
Another great Echo Summit Foray is in the history books.

Sadly, the weather has been so warm and dry this year that despite spreading out and searching a wide area, including the tried and true locations near the still flowing creeks, no one found any edible Boletus.
Happily, we had a great time anyway.  Those of us looking for Ganoderma tsugae found as many very fresh, moist ones as we wanted...
