2021 September General Zoom Meeting: Phil Carpenter "Roundtable Discussion on Basics of Mushrooming"

Please join us for our General Meeting on Zoom .  The session will be opened at 6:30 pm for those who would like to socialize and chat with fellow mycophiles before the main meeting, which will start at 7:00 pm. 

We had hoped that our General Meetings would be back to their regular, in person format by now, but due to the current level of covid transmission and out of an abundance of caution, we will continue with the Zoom video format for another month.  Future meetings may be held virtually, in person, or in a hybrid format allowing attendees the option of participating virtually through a live video stream.

Our speaker for September is Dr. Kabir Peay from Stanford University. Kabir did his doctoral studies At UC Berkeley and now heads a highly regarded mycological research program at Stanford.

Mycology in California started with the discovery of a few species during a break in the voyage of the North Pacific expedition. The discovery of new species has every been ongoing since that time. The main players during the more than 150 years of history will be put in the spotlight, and future directions of research in the state will be laid out.

A modern important aspect of hunting mushrooms is the opportunity to become a citizen scientist by collecting data to be used by future or on-going mycological research. And it turns out that this is actually not at all difficult by using the cellphone app called iNaturalist. 

Please plan to attend the next meeting on Febuary 20 complete with your cellphone already loaded with the iNat app and learn how you can contribute to science.

Bio-remediation is an emerging, multi-disciplinary field, full of challenges and promise. Our exposure to industrial pollution and toxins are increasing in our everyday environment.
